Scope and Contents

Series I: Florida Association, 1934-2013 holds procedures, bylaws, directories, minutes, annual reports, correspondence and newsletters documenting the activities of the association.

Series II: Local Associations, 1995-2007 holds agendas produced annually by the local associations.

Series III: National Association, 1973-2010 holds scores submitted to the National Association for the composer of the year competition.

Biographical or Historical Information

The Florida State Music Teachers Association was founded in Jacksonville in 1934 to encourage the study of music, to maintain teaching standards and to advocate for its members. Governed by Roberts Rules of Order, the Association's executive board comprises a president, president-elect, vice presidents, recording secretary, corresponding secretary, treasurer, district presidents and past presidents. Local organizations are grouped into nine districts each having its own governing officers. These local organizations are affiliated with the Florida State Association which is affiliated with the Music Teachers National Association Inc.

Abstract

The collection of the Florida State Music Teachers Association is comprised of records from their meetings dating as far back as 1935. There are the minutes, agendas, newsletters and scores. It also has the bylaws and procedures, annual bulletin reports and a few other small folders comprised of annual correspondence.

The records are arranged in three series by the organization of the association.

Method of Acquisition

The Florida Teacher Music Association donated these materials to the University of Central Florida Libraries, Special Collections and University Archives in 1979 (CFM1979_01) and 2013 (CFM2013_06).

Processing Information

In this collection, I organized everything chronologically. I removed all the documents from their binders and folders. I also removed the Florida Music Director journal which is catalogued in the online catalog. All of the documents were placed in in acid free folders and boxes.
