Biographical or Historical Information
At the end of World War II, tourism and trade in Florida was on the rise. Traffic on local roads throughout the state was congested, prompting city and state leaders to consider a toll road system. A small group of state business leaders formed the Florida Free Highway Association to challenge the proposed toll road system, claiming that tolls would hurt business and further slow already congested roads.
