Scope and Contents

The Disney Ephemera Collection is a collection of Disney guides, publications, reports, brochures, news clippings, and memorabilia all related to the Walt Disney World Resort located in Central Florida from the 1960s through the present day.

Series I: Walt Disney World Resort, 1980-2007, Undated, contains materials related to the different attractions in the Walt Disney World Resort. This includes general vacation guides, as well as information about the Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, MGM, Animal Kingdom, the Walt Disney World resorts and other Walt Disney World attractions, such as, Pleasure Island and Typhoon Lagoon.

Series II: Disney Publications, 1970-2007, Undated, consists of publications produced by the Walt Disney Corporation. The Disney Catalog, Channel Magazine, Look, Disneyana Collector, Innovation in Action, Millennium Media Guide, NewsFlash, Walt Disney Communicator, Quarterly reports, and Walt Disney World News can be found in this series.

Series III: Publications about Disney, 1966-2007, Undated, includes articles from publications about Walt Disney World produced by outside sources such as Florida Trend, Natural History, Future Life, Comics Scene, Amiga World, and TOYBOX.

Series IV: Disney Memorabilia, 1975-2017, Undated, includes various items collected from Walt Disney World such as a calendar, Davy Crockett trading cards, Disney Dollar from 1988, pins, postcards, stickers, paper and plastic shopping bags, glasses, and video games.

Biographical or Historical Information

Dean DeBolt is the head of special collections at the University of West Florida Library. DeBolt collected a number of materials during his vacations at the Walt Disney World Resort and donated them to the University of Central Florida Libraries Special Collections in 2004 and 2011 because of the University's close proximity to Walt Disney World. Julia Arias, a Disney employee and enthusiast, collected materials for her daughter while on vacation at Walt Disney World Resort. April Anderson also provided a small collection of park brochures in 2010.

Disney Enterprises, Inc. is a Delaware Corporation with its principal place of business in Burbank, California and is an entertainment company and owner of a vast array of intellectual properties including live-action and animated movies and television shows. Walt Disney World opened in 1971 with the Magic Kingdom as the first theme park. By 2007, it had expanded to include four theme parks, two water parks, five golf courses, numerous resort hotels and a variety of other entertainment and recreation centers. Most recently, Walt Disney World announced a new resort and rides based on the Star Wars film franchise.

Abstract

The Disney Ephemera Collection is a collection of reports, brochures, memorabilia, articles and news clippings about Disney Enterprises and the Walt Disney World Resort in Central Florida. The collection contains materials related to the different locations within the resort complex, including information about the Disney parks, resorts and other attractions. Publications in the collection were produced by both the Disney Corporation and outside sources.

Arrangement Note

This collection is arranged into four series: information about the Walt Disney World Resort, Disney Publications, Publications about Disney, and Disney Memorabilia. Information about the Walt Disney World Resort was further divided by location within the resort area. Disney Publications were divided into type of publication and Publications about Disney were split into magazine articles and newspaper articles.

Method of Acquisition

These materials were donated to the University of Central Florida Libraries, Special Collections and University Archives by Dean DeBolt in 2004 (CFM2004_05) and 2011 (CFM2011_05),  Julia Arias in 2008 (CFM2008_02), and April Anderson in 2010 (CFM2010_01). The University will continue to add materials relevant to the history of Disney, particularly in Central Florida region.

Processing Information

Collection processed by Jessica Achberger; finding aid prepared by Jessica Achberger. In 2017, additional materials were integrated into the collection by Suphi Burak Ogreten. In 2022, additional materials were integrated by intern Lily Russell. This collection was processed by type of material. Information about locations within the Walt Disney World Resort was combined and foldered. Publications were also foldered in acid free folders. Shopping bags from the Disney parks have been unfolded and stored in a separate archival box.
