NASA Ephemera Collection
Scope and Contents
Items in this collection are arranged primarily by mission. Missions that include just one item were placed chronologically in miscellaneous mission folders. Other series include publications, information guides and general ephemera.
Series I: Missions, 1969 - 1993, 2005, contains crew and other related photos (such as training and launches), assorted information kits, guest passes, patches, pins, stickers and other mission-specific ephemera.
Series II: Space News Publications, 1978-1994, contains 4 issues of Lockheed Horizons (1982-1983, 1987-1988), 3 issues of Rockwell news (1978, 1981, undated), 1 issue of Space News Roundup (1989), 6 issues of Spaceport News (1981, 1986-1989, 1991) and 3 issues of Star Gazer (1988, 1993-1994).
Series III: Information guides (1987, undated), contains a Kennedy Space Center general information guide and a 25th anniversary guide (1987).
Series IV: Miscellaneous Ephemera, (1969-2006, undated), consists of items -- patches, stickers, posters and pins -- that do not fit into the mission-specific part of the collection.

Biographical or Historical Information
The items presented here were collected by former UCF Librarian Cheryl and her husband Fred Mahan. Cheryl worked at UCF from 1977 (when it was still called FTU) until she retired in early 2007. Fred worked at the Kennedy Space Center in several different capacities from 1979 until his retirement in 1995. His various positions include time spent as a Management Systems Analyst (1979-1985), member of the Vehicle Integration Test team (1989-1994) and the Astronaut Office (JSC) resource person for OV-103 Discovery. The bulk of the items found in this collection are personal artifacts that span Mr. Mahan's tenure with NASA.

Abstract
This collection contains a wide variety of NASA memorabilia including pictures, patches, pins and stickers; ranging from 1969 to 2005. Also included are a number of mission charts, a wide range of crew photos and an assortment of space news publications including the Lockheed Horizons, The Rockwell News, Space News Roundup, Space Port News and Star Gazer. Of significant interest is the collection of photos (several signed) and memorabilia from the ill-fated 1986 Challenger mission Space Transportation System (STS) 51L.
Method of Acquisition
Cheryl & Fred Mahan transferred these materials to the University of Central Florida Libraries, Special Collections and University Archives in 2004 (CFM2004_06).
Processing Information
Collection processed by John Venecek; finding aid prepared by John Venecek and Suphi Burak Ogreten. The collection was organized according to mission, and any items that were not mission-specific were placed into miscellaneous folders. All photos printed on photo paper were placed in polyester sleeves, buttons and pins were placed in trays, oversized newspapers and mission charts were placed in L-sleeves and the velcro shorts were wrapped in tissue paper and stores with the trays.
