Scope and Contents

Series I; Research Files, 1880-2006, consists of Paul Hartman's research materials on Cross-Florida Barge Canal, Florida East Coast Railway, Florida Engineering Inventory, Florida History, Historic Bridges in Florida, Historic Engineering in Florida, and Key West Extension. Series holds newsclippings, correspondence, maps, pamphlets, papers, and photographs.

Series II; Personal Files, 1940-1975, contains a photograph of J. Paul Hartman standing by Florida Technological University (FTU) Railroad Club; an original letterhead issued by FTU; a pamphlet issued by the University of Central Florida Library regarding to Engineering Special Collection; unused War Ration Book One issued by the United State of America, Office of Price Administration; and a newsclipping from weekly student-run newspaper of the University of Central Florida called "FuTUre" talks about the Railroad Club which was organized by Dr. John Hartman.

Series III; Images, 1605-1980, consists of over 1,400 images related to Florida bridges, airport, railroads, steamboats, historical landmarks, Key West Extension, Geology of Florida (ground & sinkholes), and Walt Disney World & Disney Water Transportation. Series also holds various negative film strips and images related to trains, historical buildings, miniature trains, railroads and stations in United States.

Biographical or Historical Information

Dr. John P. Hartman was a professor emeritus of Engineering in Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at the University of Central Florida. He has undergraduate degrees from Principia College and Washington University (St. Louis), and graduate degrees from Harvard University and the University of Florida. He also taught in the U.S. Naval Nuclear Power School (Mare Island, CA) and worked for Ardaman and Associates and Martin-Marietta in Orlando. He was a Fellow Member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and Florida Engineering Society and served on the Florida National Register Review Board. He was a registered Professional Engineer in Florida and a life-long ferroequinologist. A member of the UCF chapter faculty, he retired in 1998 after thirty years at the university, including twenty years in administrative positions including Assistant Dean.

While he was teaching at the Florida Technological University, published the following titles:

A compendium called "Engineering History Compendium" to assist students in taking lecture notes and studying for the course, Engineering and Technology in History, offered by the College of Engineering at the University of Central Florida. This course was offered since the opening of Florida Technological University in 1968.

"Historic American Engineering Record, State of Florida - Inventory" was a report that covers the major results of an inventory of historic engineering works in the State of Florida done during 1973 under the auspices of the Historic American Engineering Record (HAER) division of the National Park Service, in cooperation with Florida Technological University.

"Civil Engineering Landmarks: State of Florida" booklet was another publication Hartman created during his tenure as a faculty member in FTU. This booklet was obtained through grant support from the Historic American Engineering Record and Florida Technological University during 1972-73 and 1974-75.

He was also the editor of "Selected Readings: Engineering in Human Affairs Seminar" prepared for use in the Engineering in Human Affairs Senior Seminar, a two-credit course required for all Florida Technological University students not enrolled in the College of Engineering.

Dr. Paul Hartman, he also liked to be called "Dr. Charm.", passed away at the age of 66 on Sunday, November 17, 2002. He is survived by his wife, Mary A. Hartman and his sons. In honor of Dr. J. Paul Hartman, University of Central Florida Foundation established Scholarship Fund for students as well.

Abstract

John P. Hartman collection includes his research materials relating to canals, bridges, railways, transportation systems and historical engineering in Florida. Entire collection range from 1605 to 2006, but are concentrated in the era when population in Florida exploded between 1905 and 1993. The collection includes clippings, correspondence, maps, pamphlets, papers and over 1,200 slides related to Florida.

Arrangement Note

The purpose of the collection is to provide classification and storage of appropriate written materials important in the historical development of engineering and technology with major emphasis on engineering education. The collection is arranged in three series by type of document and arranged chronologically.

Method of Acquisition

Mary Alice Hartman donated these materials to the University of Central Florida Libraries, Special Collections and University Archives in 2004 (CFM2004_09).

Processing Information

Files were put into pH neutral folders and slides were housed in polypropylene slide pages. Then the collection was put into a pH neutral box.
