Scope and Contents

The bulk of the collection contains files related to Hudson's activities with the United Faculty of Florida from 1971 through 2004. The collection is organized in two series, organizational files and personal files. These materials are kept in chronological order as they were received from Phyllis J. Hudson.

Series I: Organizational Files, 1971-2005, Undated, includes materials concerning grieving processes, FTU librarian's sex equity study, constitution and bylaws of United Faculty of Florida - UCF Chapter, State University System salary equity studies, financial reports, meeting notes, newsletters, miscellaneous reports, memos, and correspondence.

Series II: Personal Files, 1973-2007, Undated, contains UCF/UFF archives master lists from 1974 to 1987 highlights important publications, articles, newsletters, bargaining proposals and letters given each year; two audio cassettes; bargaining email print-outs from 2003; UFF archives digital files from 1986, 2000, and 2001; two CDs and sixteen pins produced by National Education Association; various promotional items for UFF; Phyllis Hudson's notepads; stickers; twelve award ribbons Hudson received from 1983 through 2001; UFF event photographs, negatives, and slides; postcards Hudson received from members and friends; and UCF faculty bargaining unit employees reports.

Biographical Information

These materials were collected by Phyllis Janecke Hudson, former University of Central Florida (UCF) Librarian for thirty-four years. She was born August 16, 1933 in Rock Island, Illinois. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in English from University of Illinois at Urbana (1965), Master of Science in Library Science from University of Illinois at Urbana (1970), and Doctoral studies in Educational Leadership from University of Florida (1978-1979). She also served as a cataloger (1973-1974), and as a reference librarian (1974-2004) at the University of Central Florida Libraries.

Hudson interested herself in many organizations concerned with employment issues. She chaired the United Faculty of Florida Women's Rights Committee from 1977-1979. She was president of the Association of College and Research Libraries Florida Chapter from 1982-1983. Hudson also chaired the Florida Library Association Women in Libraries Caucus from 1981-1982 and the Collective Bargaining in Libraries Caucus from 1987-1988. She was a director of the National Education Association (NEA) Florida Teaching Profession Board from 1987-1989.

Her publications include four articles in Florida Libraries entitled "“A Copyright Conference"” (September 1977), “LOBI News” (1978-1979), "Equal Pay Issue at FTU" (May/June 1978) and "Librarians Denied Sex Equality" (November/December 1978). In the Fall 1982 issue of Reach, she also published "Comparable Worth". She has received many professional awards and honors such as Librarian-in-Residence from Graduate School of Library Science from University of Illinois (1977), Excellence in Leadership Award from University of Central Florida (1989), and a Professional Development Leave with her research topic on “"Collective Bargaining and Academic Librarians"” from University of Central Florida (1994).

Abstract

Phyllis J. Hudson, former University of Central Florida (UCF) Librarian, was elected to the office of President of the United Faculty of Florida (UFF) in 1989 and represented UCF on the UFF negotiations committee. She was a member of the UFF Contract Enforcement Committee and was active in the UCF/UFF chapter. Her collection includes all of her activities with the organization from 1971 to 2004 such as bargaining agreements, by-laws, reports, minutes, list of union members, correspondence of the UFF’'s local chapter activities, publications, newspaper clippings, negotiations, newsletters, surveys, training materials, calendar directories, and various ephemera.

Acquisition Method

Phyllis J. Hudson donated these materials to the University of Central Florida Libraries, Special Collections and University Archives in 2006 (Accession no. CFM2006_03).

Processing Information

Processed by Suphi Burak Ogreten; finding aid prepared by Suphi Burak Ogreten. Documents were rehoused in acid free folders and archival boxes. Staples, rubber bands, and clear covers were removed and used plastic paper clips. Photographs were placed in pH neutral sleeves and housed in separate folders by year. Documents that contained faculty members' social security numbers have been removed from the collection with the approval of Special Collections & University Archives, Department Head.
