Scope and Contents

This collection is divided into two series by subject.

Series I: Commercial and Botanical, 1935-1988 documents Nally's work in growing plants. Images show the Nally home in Gotha, bromeliad collectors and plants; some of which are shown in exhibitions and commercial displays.

Series II: Personal, 1902-2001 holds photographs, writings and memorabilia that document Nally's family and other interests. Photographs show family, friends and the family home in New York.

Biographical or Historical Information

Michael A. Spencer was born in Orlando and grew up in Winter Garden, Florida. He worked at Sand Hill Nursery near Lake Avalon and the Land of Bromeliads in Gotha before finding employment with Julian Nally on Henry Nehrling's former property. After the Nally estate was sold, Spencer worked for Racine Foster at Bromel-La. He graduated from UCF in 1990 summa cum laude with a BA in Liberal Studies and then found employment with Lyman B. Smith at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. Spencer collected these materials on Julian Nally as part of his interest in bromeliads and their collectors. He now lives in Frederick, Maryland where he has served on the Historic Preservation Commission since 2004.

Abstract

Julian Nally grew bromeliads and other plants on the property that had once belonged to Henry Nehrling at Gotha, Florida. This collection documents both his work at the property and his personal life.

Method of Acquisition

Michael A. Spencer donated these materials to the University of Central Florida Libraries, Special Collections and University Archives Department in 2006 (CFM2006_08c) and 2007.
