Howard W. Eves Audio Cassette Collection

 Collection
Identifier: SC-088

Scope and Contents

The collection was originally believed to be copies of an interview with Professor Eves conducted by Douglas Kent Brumbaugh (May 26, 1939-May 31, 2010), a Professor of Mathematics Education at the University of Central Florida, under the span of 28 audio cassettes. However, results upon further review revealed the collection to be recordings conducted by a female student attending Professor Eves' spring semester class, History of Mathematics, at the University of Central Florida, circa 1990. The recordings are arranged with the 28 cassette tapes numerically organized. Due to the condition of the casette tapes, the collection was digitized onto audio disc versions. The digital copies are separated into two groups: recordings 1 through 13 in group 1 and recordings 14 through 28 in group 2.

Biographical or Historical Information

Howard Whitley Eves (January 10, 1911-June 6, 2004) was a noted mathematician, whose work focused on geometry but he also published histories of mathematics as well. Dr. Eves received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Virginia in 1934, graduated with his Master's degree from Harvard University in 1935, and graduated from Oregon State College (now Oregon State University) with a doctorate degree in Mathematics in 1948. His dissertation, A Class of Projective Space Curves, was written under the guidance of Ingomar Hostetter. Dr. Eves became Professor Emeritus in 1976 after teaching at the University of Maine for twenty-two years, but later taught during spring semesters at the University of Central Florida from 1986 until 1991.

Dr. Eves joined the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) in 1942, where he became a spokesman for the organization and helped found the Northeast Section on November 26, 1955. He was the editor for the Elementary Problem Department of the American Mathematical Monthly for twenty-five years. He also was a member of the American Mathematical Society and the French Mathematical Society.

Dr. Eves was a noted author as well, publishing his acclaimed Mathematical Circles series from 1969 to 1988 and his two-volume Survey of Geometry in 1972. Following his retirement, he published his autobiography, Mathematical Reminiscences, in 2001. Dr. Eves passed away on June 6, 2004 at the age of 93.

Abstract

A collection of 28 recordings of Professor Howard Whitley Eves teaching his Spring Semester class, the History of Mathematics, at the University of Central Florida. Professor Eves taught at the University of Central Florida from 1986 to 1991. The subject ranges from mathematics in the natural world to the development of mathematics across the globe during the early Middle Ages.

Arrangement Note

The collection is arranged in numerical and chronological order of recordings.

Method of Acquisition

Max Bell transferred these materials to the University of Central Florida Libraries, Special Collections and University Archives in 2010 (CFM2011_01).

Related Materials

A large book collection accompanies this collection and may be accessed by performing a series search for "Howard Eves Mathematics Collection" in the Library Catalog.

Processing Information

The collection was donated by Max Bell, Professor Emeritus from the University of Chicago, on December 9, 2010. The 28 audio cassettes comprising the collection were digitized into audio compact discs by December 5, 2017. The full collection was then rehoused and a finding aid was created by Steven Craig Trelstad in 2018.
