Biographical/Historical Note

As part of the Special Collections and University Archives, the Home Movie Archive seeks to collect 8mm, Super 8mm, and 16mm home movies, captured mostly from late 1930s through the end of the 1980s, which have cultural, historical, scientific, or artistic significance, with a focus on Central Florida and its residents.

The aim of creating a Home Movie Archive is to ensure that the valuable social and historical information, captured by ordinary citizens, be preserved as part of the Special Collections and University Archives permanent holdings-a non-circulating collection whose use is confined to the Special Collections reading/research room.

The UCF Libraries will administer, permanently house, preserve, inventory, process, maintain, and make available a Home Movie Archive to the public, researchers, and scholars, in accordance with the UCF Libraries' established policies and procedures.

Abstract

The Home Move Archive houses films created by individuals that mostly depict their family interactions, ceremonies, celebrations, and vacations. Others depict famous moments in history such as the opening day of Walt Disney World or the 1964 World's Fair. The origins of the footage in the collection span across North America, South America, Europe, Africa, and Asia.

Arrangement

The first arrangement and description of the archives contents was completed in 2015. The collection is housed on a protected drive and on discs. Presently, the archive is arranged based on the donor in alphabetical order and each film is numerically ordered.

The collection contains 8mm, Super 8mm, and 16mm film reels donated by 54 donors from 2010-2014. The footage of the reels may or may not be listed in chronological order.

Acquisition Information

Various donors donated the materials to the University of Central Film Department from 2010-2013; their names are used to differentiate their films in the collection. the UCF Film Department transferred these materials to the University of Central Florida Libraries, Special Collections and University Archives in 2014.

Processing History

Most of the footage was donated during the University of Central Florida Film Department's Home Movie Day events from 2010 through 2013 with individual donations thereafter until 2014. Some of the reels were repaired by the UCF Film Department; more information regarding those repairs can be found in the administrative records. The films were digitized on discs and onto a Western Digital My Book Studio II Dual-drive Storage System with RAID from 2011 to 2013. The UCF Film Department transferred the collection to the UCF Library Special Collections on March 3, 2014.

A supplementary guide was created by David D. Morton in 2015; additions to the guide were integrated by Angie Villafane Martinez, John Settle, and Steven Craig Trelstad from 2017 to 2019. Reels 142 (LN_01), 143 (LN_02), 148 (MB_01), and 150 (MB_04) have vinegar syndrome and are being kept separate from the rest of the collection.
