Biographical or Historical Information
During the 1972-1973 school year, the colleges at Florida Technological University, now the University of Central Florida, prepared self studies for each of their departments and programs. The administrative departments at the university followed suit. Each department described the roles that existed within each of their respective fields. These roles included teaching, researching, counseling, advising, evaluating, and the general scope of the departments themselves. In some cases, departments discussed classes that had been offered and cancelled in the aforementioned period of time. Each self study covers the philosophy, the organization, the educational program, the financial resources, the faculty, the library services, student personnel, the physical space, special activities provided by, and additional information relating to their respective departments. Each self study begins with a brief abstract that describes how each of the departments or colleges operate in accordance with directives from the Board of Regents and the University. The self studies exist to provide the guidelines and information relating to the departments while also coinciding with the guidelines provided by higher-up university and state officials. The period covered for each department goes back to their creation, with most relating back to 1968, and was completed in Spring of 1973.
In the 1968-1969 school year, there were five colleges and twenty-five departments. By 1969-1970, the number of departments had expanded to thirty-four departments. By 1970-1971, the number of departments had expanded to thirty-nine. This number stayed the same in 1971-1972 and decreased by one in 1972-1973. With this initial expansion came a need for the departments to explain their place within their respective colleges, and each college to identify their theories and philosophies on a large scale when connected to the rest of the university. In many cases, such as the Department of Accountancy, objectives presented to the individual departments oftentimes had to be scaled down to match resources. Not all of the programs created a self study, such as the Pre-Law, Comprehensive Education (1-12), and Engineering Technology tracks of their respective departments. In one case, the Economics and Finance Departments shared a self study.
