Biographical or Historical Information

Starting in 1969, Medical Records Science was listed as an undergraduate program offered by the Department of Allied Health Sciences. Students enrolled in this program to learn the study of the preparation and keeping of all forms of medical records. The program and department were both housed in the College of Natural Science. In 1972, the program name changed to Medical Record Administration (MRA).

In 1978, the program moved with several others into the newly created College of Health Related Professions, which was renamed the College of Health in 1980. From 1978 to 1990, Medical Record Administration was not under a specific academic department. Then in 1990, the same year that the College of Health became the College of Health and Professional Studies, Medical Record Administration became a program within the newly created Department of Health Sciences. In 1991, the college name changed again to the College of Health and Public Affairs, and was often referred to with the acronym COHPA.

Soon after, in 1993, the Medical Record Administration program was renamed Health Information Management (HIM). The program was moved first to the new Department of Health Services Administration, then moved to the Department of Health Professions and Physical Therapy. Health Information Management remained in this department, which was renamed the Department of Health Professions in 2000, until July 2008, when the Health Information Management program became part of a new Department of Health Management and Informatics.
