Biographical or Historical Information
The FTU/UCF Music Department started in the fall of 1968 in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. At that time, all students who were seeking to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music were required to perform a recital in their major applied area (instrument or voice) and were required to pass a piano proficiency examination.
The College of Education began offering a post baccalaureate specialization in Music Education as part of their comprehensive Master of Arts degree in 1970/1971. With the formation of the College of Arts and Sciences in 1981/1982, Music became a separate department with its own chair and continued to offer a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music and Music Education, with specializations in applied music, piano pedagogy, instrumental music education, choral music education, and elementary school music education. Today, the undergraduate degree also includes tracks in Jazz Studies, Music Composition, and Music Performance.
In 2006, the department joined prestigious music programs as an All-Steinway School, the first to do so in the state of Florida.
The Master of Arts in Music started to be offered by the University of Central Florida Music Department in 2008/2009. The program covers an array of interests in music such as performance, conducting, jazz studies, music education, and composition. Non-thesis students have the option to perform a recital to fulfill the requirements of the program.
In 2010, the Music Department moved into the newly built Performing Arts Center, which included a recording studio, a keyboard studio, chamber music room, electro-acoustic music lab, percussion ensemble rooms, practice rooms, a 600-seat concert hall, and a 263-seat recital hall.
The Music Department holds a variety of events each year, which involve participation of students, faculty, as well as guest artists from all over the world.
