Scope and Contents

The basis for the this collection is the News and Information department's images. However, additional images from a variety of sources will continue to be added to create a collection of images relevant to the university's history. Many of the images were published either in university publications, such as, the university catalogue, or student or alumni publications, or in local newspapers such as the Orlando Sentinel. These images are photographic prints, negatives, proof sheets and color positives. The prints are mostly black and white, but some are in color especially Series V that holds the slides and color positives that are 35mm and 120mm. Not all the images have been identified.

Series I: People, 1965-2008 contains photographic prints of individuals and groups that have been arranged in subseries by the role that the individual played in the University. Faculty, staff and administrators form the first subseries, followed by students, alumni, regents trustees and governors, advisors, Women's Club members, donors, government officials, speakers, performers and visitors.

Series II: Buildings, 1966-2006 holds images of buildings and construction both on the main campus and the regional campuses.

Series III: Events, 1967-2006 contains images of a variety of occasions. The first subseries concerns university events, such as, commencement and homecoming. The second subseries holds images of sporting events including not only intercollegiate sports but also intramural and casual games. A third subseries contains photographs taken by the Campus Activities Board of their events and activities. Fund-raisers, Social and Community events and a miscellaneous group form the remaining subseries.

Series IV: Campus Life, 1966-2004 holds images concerning campus life from academic endeavours and performances to the resources and services offered to students. Clubs are also documented here with particular reference to fraternity and sorority activities. This series ends with an assortment of images showing general scenes of campus activity, images of university icons and memorabilia and images used in publications that illuminate information about the University.

Series V: Slides and Color Positives, 1965-2004 holds slides that are arranged in two subseries chronologically and by subject. The subjects are more general than the arrangement for the photographs, but the topics are similar.

Series VI: Negatives with Proof Sheets 1966-2003 holds negatives that have either proofs, contact sheets, or prints associated with them. It encompasses all of the topics noted in the first four series. Although many images may not be found elsewhere in the collection, this series includes the originals of the prints from the first four series.

Series VII: Negatives, 1965-2004 holds negatives mostly from images in the first four series arranged chronologically and by subject. Again, the topics are similar to those in the other series.

Abstract

The basis for this record group are photographs that were taken for use as publicity material for the University of Central Florida. The images document all aspects of university life, including annual events such as commencement and homecoming, portraits of faculty, students, alumni, and visitors to the university including speakers, performers, and government officials. Buildings on both the main campus and regional campuses are shown during construction and after completion. Instructors are shown teaching and researching and students are shown studying in laboratories and classrooms.

Arrangement Note

The images are arranged in seven series. The first four series contain photographic prints arranged by subject; later series are organized by format beginning with slides and color positives, negatives with proof sheets follow and negatives alone form the last series.

Method of Acquisition

The Office of Public Affairs transferred these photographs to the University Archives in 1989. Subsequently, several donors have added to the collection and News and Information have transferred additional images.

Related Materials

More photographs may be found in the papers of individual University Presidents. Scrapbooks illustrate the visit of President Richard M. Nixon. As many of the photographs have been published, further information about them may be found in University Publications, such as, Report, Emphasis, and Accent. All these materials may be accessed in the Special Collections and University Archives Reading Room.

Processing Information

Duplicates were removed, and the photographs were rehoused in acid-free folders. Those images that will be heavily used or fragile were placed in polyester sleeves. The negatives, proof sheets and slides were housed in polyester sleeves within acid-free folders. In 2012, all images were rehoused in half boxes to create a more stable environment. Previous large boxes were over weight and showing wear and damage, floders were not able to stay upright. Two thirds of all images have been sleeved.
