INCREASING ACCESS TO INSULIN
- Date Issued:
- 2020
- Abstract/Description:
- As insulin prices have skyrocketed over the past century, a growing number of diabetic patients struggle to afford their medication, specifically insulin. The increase in prices prevent many patients from accessing insulin and result in non-adherence to their prescribed insulin doses, leading to dire health consequences. The purpose of this work is to analyze how the price of insulin increased drastically over time as a result of extended pharmaceutical patents, FDA regulations, and examine the reason behind the lack of generic insulin alternatives on the market. To make insulin more accessible for diabetic patients, the insulin market must be reformed to encourage the development of biosimilar insulin alternatives, regulate insulin supply chain price increases, and monitor the adherence to insulin of diabetic patients.
