Biscayne Bay consists of a number of shallow, interconnected, estuarine lagoons, bounded on the west by the Florida mainland and on the east by the upper Florida Keys. (See Figure 1.1.) Central Biscayne Bay extends from Rickenbacker Causeway in the north to Cutter Bank in the south and exchanges with the ocean through a number of tidal inlets. The more significant inlets are Bear Cut, Safety Valve, Caesar's Creek, Broad Creek, and Angelfish Creek. Depths in the interior of the bay vary from 2 to 4 meters.
