Scope and Contents
Series I: History of CREOL, 1984-1991 includes a brief overview at the beginning that explains how the materials came to be collected and thereafter are arranged chronologically. Dr. Martin Stickly asked Dr. Ronald L. Phillips to collate the materials that show how government support was rallied, funds were solicited and faculty hired for CREOL.

Biographical or Historical Information
Originally created as the State University System's Center of Excellence in optical and laser sciences, the Center for Research in Electro-Optics and Lasers was renamed in 1996 as the Center for Research and Education in Optics and Lasers. It is now a research center within the College of Optics & Photonics. CREOL provides education in optical science and engineering, conducts scholarly fundamental and applied research and aids in the development of Florida's technology-based industries.

A collection of letters, memoranda, reports and news releases, which documents the establishment of CREOL.

This collection is arranged in one series with a brief overview at the beginning that explains how the materials came to be collected and thereafter are arranged chronologically.
Method of Acquisition
It is unknown who transferred these materials to the University of Central Florida Libraries, Special Collections and University Archives in 2003 (CFU2003_03). It is believed Ronald L. Phillips and Martin Stickly donated these materials to the University of Central Florida Libraries, Special Collections and University Archives in 2003.

Processing Information
Collection processed by and finding aid prepared by Judith Beale in 2006. Materials were removed from a binder and placed in acid-free folders and box. The finding aid was updated for consistency among all collections by Mary Rubin in 2012, resulting in edition 2. The finding aid was placed into Archon, with adjustments made for Archon and resulting in edition 3, by Mary Rubin in 2015. The acquisition method field and the subjects were updated by Kryslynn Collazo in 2018, resulting in edition 2.
