Series II: M. J. Soileau's Correspondence, 1990-1999 includes letters and emails received and sent by M.J. Soileau regarding speakers visiting from abroad, department meetings, plans, reference letters, travel, questionnaires and regalia.

Biographical or Historical Information
Originally created as the State University System's Center of Excellence in optical and laser sciences, the Center for Research in Electro-Optics and Lasers (CREOL) was renamed in 1996 as the Center for Research and Education in Optics and Lasers. Dr. M. J. Soileau became CREOL's first director in 1987 followed by Dr. Eric Van Stryland in 1999. It is now a research center within the College of Optics & Photonics presided over by Dean Bahaa Saleh. CREOL provides education in optical science and engineering, conducts scholarly fundamental and applied research and aids in the development of Florida's technology-based industries.

Abstract
The Center for Research and Education in Optics and Lasers was founded in 1986 and is currently recognized as a center for excellence regarding research in a wide range of optics and photonics technologies. This collection contains conference materials and correspondence related to CREOL and its first director M. J. Soileau.

Eric Van Stryland transferred these materials to the University of Central Florida Libraries, Special Collection and University Archives in 2007 (CFU2007_04 and CFU2007_11).

Processing Information
Collection processed by and finding aid prepared by Jeffrey Baumiller in 2009. Some of the folders contain transparencies. These transparencies are carefully organized with tissue paper placed between each individual sheet. Information on a 3.5" floppy disk was printed and the disk discarded.The finding aid was updated for consistency among all collections by Mary Rubin in 2012, resuling in edition 2. The finding aid was placed into Archon, with adjustments made for Archon and resulting in edition 3, by Mary Rubin in 2015. The acquisition method field and the subjects were updated by Kryslynn Collazo in 2018, resulting in edition 4.
