Biographical or Historical Information

According to The UCF Report June 2, 1995 issue, the Office of Diversity Initiatives (ODI) was established by then President Hitt in 1994. ODI was the result of Hitt's goal to make UCF more inclusive. The origins of this goal stems in 1992, when the December 1st Orlando Sentinel issue reported that Hitt named Valarie King Director of Minority Student Services. As director, she appraised services accessible to minority students and searched for ways to improve those services. King's appointment as director would later complement her role as chairwomen of the Diversity Task Force. Both The Central Florida Future, February 9, 1993 issue and The UCF Report from 1995 featured articles that explained how the task force was created by Hitt to study the diversity and attitudes on campus between 1992-1994. The task force concluded an office should be created to deal with the changing landscape of UCF. As a result of her contributions, Valarie King became the founding director of the Office of Diversity Initiatives.

Since 1994, ODI has been an intricate part of the UCF community through their use of unique programs, events, and workshops. The most notable of these events hosted by ODI is the annual Diversity Week, which is usually held in early to mid-October. On November 17, 1993, The Central Florida Future reported about the first Diversity Week, which was presented by the Diversity Task Force. Both President Hitt and Valarie King wanted Diversity Week to help faculty explain human diversity issues to better the classroom setting. Each year ODI selects a theme which is celebrated throughout the week in activities coordinated by the office. Themes include the 1996's theme of "Diversity: A Transforming Power" to 2017's theme of "Transform and Inspire Inclusion."

Other programs include the Nguzo Saba Celebration, the Summer Faculty Development Conference (formerly named the Faculty Domestic Diversity Summer Institute 2000-2006), the National Conference on Leadership Diversity, the Leadership Empowerment Program (formerly named Leadership Enhancement Program 1996-2015), the Seeking Educational Equity & Diversity (SEED), the MOSAIC Legacy Program, and Women's History Month.

In 2014, after 20 years of being called the Office of Diversity Initiatives, the office was renamed the Office of Diversity and Inclusion. The years that followed showcased ODI's new strategies and mission of making UCF a model for diversity and inclusion practice, policies and culture. ODI has done this by taking part in campaigns, which include Be Yourself, Together and Respect UCF. The campaigns help facilitate their goal to help the UCF community be more inclusive by actively having students share their input and being engaged.
