University of Central Florida Office of the President Records

Series I: State University System, 1969-2002 contains materials that document the broad scope of the State University System that was the entity governed by the Board of Regents from 1965 to 2001. It shows the president's work with both the State University System and federal entities in dealing with the university's operations and budgetary concerns. Most of these records were created by or for the Chancellor, Board of Regents and Council of Presidents. This series includes information about the dissolution of the Board of Regents.

Series II: Academic Affairs, 1973-2004 holds records concerning the academic life of the University. This series includes documents about individual colleges, centers and institutes, branch campuses, faculty, research, Undergraduate Studies, the library, WUCF, programs and Founders' Day. Documents written in Russian are included in the file concerning the Florida/USSR International Linkage Institute and the Chinese language documents are in the International Programs file. Materials of interest include individual department files, files on branch campuses and related facilities, the Sinkhole Research Institute, Women's Center, and the founding and operations of the Orlando Shakespeare Festival.

Series III: Student Affairs, 1980-2002 contains materials that relate to aspects of university life that fall under the auspices of the Vice-President for Student Affairs or that directly interest students. This series includes information about housing and how it was financed, food service, the building of the Student Union and the International Student Center. It also holds materials on Student Government, greek life and other student associations.

Series IV: University Relations, 1969-2003 holds materials concerning the university's relationships with outside individuals and companies. Many of the materials in this series relate to the Foundation that raises money for the University. The Foundation's files mostly consist of Board Meeting minutes, budgetary concerns, scholarship fund-raisers and the building of the President's House. The University Club files document the public discussion that followed when the Foundation decided to accept scholarship funds from the club, which did not admit women or minorities as members. Other materials document alternative sources of funding and ways of marketing the university including relationships with alumni, community members and leaders, and with the State University System that governed UCF during this period.

Series V: Administration and Finance, 1968-2000 contains a small amount of material that shows the variety of subjects monitored by this division. It oversees such departments as Human Resources, Facilities Planning and the police as well as the university's finances. Budget files provide a glimpse of how money is spent and accounted for at the institution, and the other files show how costs impact every aspect of the organization including buildings, campus services and personnel.

Series VI: President's Office, 1968-2008 holds materials relating to matters in which the president was directly involved. This series above others shows the range of a president's work nationally, statewide, locally and within the university. Government, associations, businesses, community involvement and university policy all require the president's direct attention, and examples of all these aspects of his work may be found in the alphabetical files and the chronological files. One large group of files documents intercollegiate athletics. Personal files show UCF presidents' commitment to community involvement as well as the advancement of Orlando as a whole. Within the correspondence files are form letters written to the entire University, letters of complaint, praise, invitation or thanks, occasional photographs, requests to serve on committees, correspondence with officials of the government and the State University System, agreements with partners, and information concerning local organizations and businesses. All types of correspondence were sampled to form a representative selection of the types of correspondence written and received by the president. Document type files include reports, appointment books, news clippings and commemorative materials. Finally some files document the activities undertaken by Dr. Hitt's Chief of Staff.
