Scope and Contents

The collection encompasses the professional files of Leslie Ellis, the bulk of which come from the years 1978-1980, a period which brought many changes for the University, including the name change from Florida Technological University to the University of Central Florida in 1978. During this time period Ellis served both as acting President and Vice President for Academic Affairs for the University, and his files contain documents from both of these roles. However, due to his dominant role as Vice President, the collection is heavily weighted in the academic affairs of the University. In addition to Academic Affairs, there are also series related to the State University System, Student Affairs, University Affairs, Administration and Finance and general files under the heading "President's Office".

Series I: State University System, 1976-1981 contains materials that document the broad scope of the State University Sytsem that was the entity governed by the Board of Regents from 1965 to 2001. The majority of these records are meeting minutes from various committees under the Board of Regents and Council of Presidents, as well as the correspondence of the Chancellor.

Series II: Academic Affairs, 1978-1982 includes information regarding the academic life of the University. It includes documents about individual colleges, as well as centers and institutes, branch campuses, programs, research, faculty, Undergraduate and Graduate Studies and other academic University affairs. Materials of interest include individual department files, information on the partnership with the Florida Solar Energy Center, Summer Study Abroad Programs and the minutes of the Faculty Senate.

Series III: Student Affairs, 1969-1980 contains materials related to aspects of university life that directly relate to students. This series includes information on various activities and associations, the meeting minutes of the dormitory building committee and services offered to students by the University. It also contains information about the student grievance procedure and documentation of various student complaints to administration.

Series IV: University Relations, 1978-1981 holds documents that concern the University's relationships with the community, as well as information about the Foundation. Community Relations files contain information about relations with community colleges in the area as well as the local public schools. Foundation files contain meeting minutes and reports from the foundation. Public Affairs includes newspaper articles about the University of interest to Ellis, as well as various University publications.

Series V: Administration and Finance, 1978-1981 consists of documents related to business affairs within the the Univeristy. This series contains information on Budgets, including the meeting minutes of the Academic Budget Council, Buildings and Campus Services, Finance and Accounting matters and Personnel services.

Series VI: President's Office, 1977-1987 contains materials of interest to Ellis both as acting President and Vice President for Academic Affairs. Alphabetical files contain a breadth of information regarding Ellis' involvement with national, state and local educational organizations, as well as university policy and information regarding equal opportunity. This series also contains Ellis' correspondence files, which are arranged chronologically and cover a range of professional correspondence, both with University faculty and employees as well as outside institutions and the general public.

While most of the collection is open for research, some material containing faculty administrative reviews in Box 4 are closed until review by the University archivist in 2011.

Biographical or Historical Information

Leslie Lee Ellis Jr. was born on September 13, 1925 in Norfolk, Virginia. Ellis attended Tulane University where he received a B.S. in 1948 and an M.S. in 1949, both in biology. He married his wife, Dorothy Copes Diboll on December 27, 1949, with whom he has four children. Ellis obtained a doctorate in biology from the University of Oklahoma in 1952. Professionally, Ellis served as a professor of zoology, moving from a tenured position to department head of biology at Mississippi State University. He then moved to Florida Technological University to serve as a profesor and chair of the biological science department. At FTU Ellis served as the Dean and Associate Vice President of Graduate Studies and Research through the seventies, until becoming acting President in 1978, when the name was changed to the University of Central Florida. After serving as acting President he became the Vice President of Academic Affairs, a positon which he held until 1987, when he became the d! irector of the Office of Research Park Affairs and the Interim Dean of the College of Health and Public Services. Ellis retired in 1990, returning briefly to the University to serve as interim Vice President of Research in 1993. Ellis and his wife continue to reside in the Central Florida area.

Abstract

This collection encompasses the professional files of Leslie Ellis, who served the University of Central Florida in a variety of positions, including professor, Dean and Associate Vice President of Graduate Studies and Research, director of Research Park and interim Dean of the College of Health and Public Affairs. These files represent his tenure as acting President and Vice President for Academic Affairs for the University, and come largely from the years 1978 to 1980. The collection contain correspondence, reports, meeting minutes and other materials related to Ellis' wide range of responsibilities as acting President and Vice President for Academic Affairs.

Arrangement Note

This collection is arranged according to the assumed file system of his office, similar to that of the Office of the President, but folder titles were retained. Files are arranged alphabetically within series and subseries and individual files are organized chronologically.

Method of Acquisition

Leslie Ellis transferred these materials to the University of Central Florida Libraries, Special Collections and University Archives in 1986.

Processing Information

Collection processed by and finding aid prepared by Jessica Achberger in 2007. This collection was processed according to the basic file system of the Office of the President. Metal paper clips were replaced with plastic clips and all materials are stored in acid free folders. The finding aid was updated for consistency among all collections by Mary Rubin in 2012, resulting in edition 2. The finding aid was placed into Archon, with adjustments made for Archon and resulting in edition 3, by Mary Rubin in 2015.
