| Abstract/Description: | The Florida Sentinel was the first Negro newspaper in Florida. Issues are rare but it is believed to have begun as a weekly newspaper in Gainesville, Florida (1887-1894?); moved to Pensacola (1894?-1912?), and then to Jacksonville (1912? - ?). This issue is an “annual” edition, the “10th annual” published in Pensacola in 1904. The masthead states: “Tenth Edition illustrating the Business Growth of Pensacola and the Advancement of Educational Institutions for the Negro.” Matthew M. Lewey, Editor and Publisher. | |
