| Summary: | The Kissimmee River Basin encompasses 5,465 square km with its headwaters originating near Orlando, Florida. Due to a history of flood damages associated with severe storm events and to facilitate drainage, the U.S. Congress authorized the construction of a flood control project for the Kissimmee River Basin in 1954. Shortly after completion of the project in 1970 it became evident that the ecosystem had suffered numerous detrimental effects. | |
| Summary: | Twelve restoration alternatives have been identified by the U.S Army Corps of Engineers as possible measures to repair the impacts associated with the present system of water works. The objectives of the Florida Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission's Kissimmee Wetlands Investigation Section were to further document impacts to fish and wildlife populations, to evaluate fish and wildlife habitat conditions and needs within this region, to evaluate alternatives in terms of fish and wildlife resources, and to formulate recommendations regarding restoration measures necessary to mitigate impacts sustained by endemic fish and wildlife resources of the Kissimmee River Basin. | |
