Melaleuca (melaleuca quinquenervia [Cav.] Blake) or cajeput and Casuarina spp. are native Australian trees that are rapidly displacing native vegetation in and around the East Everglades Acquisition Area. This year marks the fifth year of a multi-agency project to locate and treat thee alien plants. A Melaleuca-free buffer zone along the eastern boundary of Everglades National Park has been established in one-mile yearly increments. The park is now bordered on the eastern side by a one-mile wide Casuarina buffer zone and a five-mile wide Melaleuca buffer zone.
