Note(s): The genus Echinus is both speciose and widely distributed. Although first observed in the Pliocene deposits of Europe and North Africa it now has a centre of distribution in the North Atlantic with widely separated populations of individual species occurring in the South Atlantic and Pacific Ocean. Although the dietary characteristics of species of Echinus are driven by local availability, the reproductive features show considerable conservatism with all species examined producing a small egg and a number of species showing seasonal reproduction. In this paper we present a conceptual model of how larvae of the genus Echinus may be dispersed and how this has lead to allopatric speciation. In sympatric populations we present a model of speciation based on the timing of spawning in relation to the spring phytoplankton bloom.
